Melbourne Rebels lock Luke Jones has talked down his side’s chances of a maiden finals appearance ahead of its Round 14 clash with the Queensland Reds.

A win on Friday night could see the Rebels finish the weekend atop the Asteron Life Super Rugby Australian conference, if other results go its way.

“This is probably the toughest competition in the world, teams are hot and cold so quickly,” said Jones

“You can never think you are on a winning hot streak, you have to come in each week and start again.”

The Rebels have won four of their last five games and have received a boost midweek, with star men Tamati Ellison and Sean McMahon back for the clash at Suncorp Stadium.

“Colby (Fainga’a) came in last week and absolutely killed it so it’s really good that guys are putting pressure on each other in certain positions.”

The Reds clash marks the start of a three-match road trip for the men from Melbourne, with the team flying out for tour of South Africa straight after its must win derby.

“Upstairs call it a business trip and I think everyone comes together. We get to the airport and we’re really focused and there’s no distractions to get the job done.”
