Pools named for Sydney 7s

The Qantas Australian Men’s Sevens team will meet New Zealand on the opening day of the HSBC Sydney 7s.

Pools were announced for the inaugural Sydney event on Sunday night and the trans-Tasman rivals were both drawn in Pool A.

The Aussies narrowly missed playing the Kiwis in last weekend’s Wellington Sevens, instead facing South Africa in their Cup quarter-final.

New Zealand went on to the win that tournament for the third time.

The fierce rivals’ match up will be a highlight of the opening day of the Sydney 7s, among a hectic schedule.

Canada and Portugal round out the Pool A teams and both are sides that Australia beat in Wellington.

Series leaders South Africa headline Pool B, with Kenya, Scotland and Russia completing the contingent.

Fiji is the top seed in Pool C and the reigning World Series champions are joined by Argentina, Samoa and France.

England and the USA are the heavyweights in the final Sydney 7s pool, with Japan and Wales the others in that pool.
