Australian Rugby Union today congratulated General (Ret.) Peter Cosgrove AC MC on his appointment to be Australia’s next Governor-General from March this year.

General Cosgrove retired from Australian Rugby Union’s Board of Directors in November last year, following six years on the Board, split across two separate terms from 2007 to 2013.

Chairman of Australian Rugby Union, Michael Hawker, said General Cosgrove’s strong values and work ethic will guide him in this new role.

“On behalf of everyone in the Australian Rugby community, I’d like to congratulate Peter Cosgrove on this very significant achievement,” said Mr Hawker.

“Peter is a man who lives his life in a way that reflects Rugby’s values of passion, integrity, discipline, respect and teamwork every day. We know he’ll do a terrific job in his new role and will continue to be a strong supporter of Australian Rugby at every opportunity.

“We have been honoured to have Her Excellency the Honourable Quentin Bryce as the Patron of Australian Rugby since 2008 and I’d like to acknowledge her contribution to our game as an outstanding ambassador for Rugby during that time.”

In his time as a Director of Australian Rugby, General Cosgrove was Chair of the Board’s Governance & Policy sub-committee, which successfully oversaw the introduction of a new constitution for Australian Rugby following a review of the game’s corporate governance in 2012.

General Cosgrove has also participated in Rugby through the Australian Services Rugby Union for many years.
