The Wallaroos have commenced a five day high performance training camp at Bond University, Gold Coast as the side looks to build on squad depth in the lead up to the Women’s Rugby World Cup in 2017.

Starting Wednesday 26 August and running to Sunday 30 August, the extended squad will build on the momentum created by the high standard of play shown at the Women’s National XVs Championship held in Sydney in July.

The Nationals saw over 200 Wallaroos aspirants get whittled down to a high performance unit of 40 women aiming to improve their abilities and further impress national coaching staff ahead of the 2016 season.

Wallaroos Head Coach Paul Verrell was looking forward to testing out individual players: “What we saw from the 2015 Women’s Nationals is that all teams had really raised the bar in their training and preparation, which translated to the performances we saw on the field.

“The aim of this camp is to place these players in a professional environment and begin to put in place the structures that we will be utilising in 2017.

“There are a lot of younger players who have really showed a lot of potential which will put pressure on capped Wallaroos to hold onto their places.”

ARU General Manager, Pathways and Performance Ben Whitaker: “This camp is a great opportunity for our coaches to support the ongoing development of these players and to get quality profiling started as we ramp up the selection and preparation process for 2017.

“Women’s XVs is one of our key targeted areas for growth in Women’s Rugby in tandem with our Sevens program and this camp will serve as an inspiration to the next generation of Wallaroos.”
