Too soon for Toomua

Matt Toomua has been ruled out of the Brumbies crucial clash with the Bulls after his ankle failed to recover in time.

The playmaker had been racing the clock after suffering a syndesmosis strain against the Lions a fortnight ago.

“He’s still just ticking off rehab return to play protocols and getting through things there,” Brumbies assistant coach Dan McKellar said. “It’s a day-by-day case with Matt.”

In a timely boost though, Scott Sio is back and has been rushed straight back into the front row against the Bulls, after two months out with a knee injury.

The prop hasn’t featured since round nine but did get through 60 minutes of club rugby last weekend.

“The knee went through fine, got through its paces.. I really got the hitout I needed coming off the six week injury,” Sio said.

So precarious is the Brumbies position that a loss against the Bulls would see the men from Canberra drop out of the Top Six with only two games left to play.

“There are 7 teams that have a real shot chance at winning the competition right now…We want to be one of those teams in the top 6 and we know what we need to do moving forward.”

History is on the Brumbies side though with the Bulls having not tasted victory in Canberra in eight years.
