1. 2000 Bledisloe Cup match
The second Bledisloe in 2000 has been dubbed the greatest game of all and fittingly, it was Lomu who had the final say. The Wallabies seemed home after a 78th minute try put them 35-34 ahead. Three minutes after full-time, All Blacks blindside flanker Taine Randell popped and over the top pass into the hands of Lomu, who powered across the line to snatch victory.
2. 1995 World Cup semi-final against England
It’s a run that will forever make then-England fullback Mike Catt the answer to a trivia question. As New Zealand faced England in the World Cup semi-final, Lomu ran around two defenders on his left wing against the English. Catt tried to pull down the All Blacks winger but instead Lomu simply ran straight over him, ultimately dragging him to the line. That iconic run was one of four tries he scored that match. It was a move that Lomu replicated throughout his career but few have been able to since.
3. 1995 World Cup debut v Ireland.
Just two matches after he made his debut as the youngest All Black ever, his first World Cup match really showed the world their first rugby superstar. He scored twice in that match, burning defenders along the way. One of his best moments didn’t result in his own try but a full-length field run led to critical offload and a try assist. At the time it was hard to believe he would be able to top that performance.
4. 2005 Cardiff Blues Heineken Cup comeback
Lomu made an unlikely comeback to the professional rugby scene with the Cardiff Blues. His first foray back into the sport was in a testimonial match earlier that year but the Blues’ Heineken Cup match was his first competitive game. While he didn’t score, the then-30 year-old make a critical line break in the match.
5. Bledisloe Cup 1995 match
1995 was his most dominant year and the Aussies were not immune from his weapons. At the SFS in 1995, scoring one try and setting up three others in a dominant display against the Wallabies.
