Having moved through the ranks of the Extended Playing Squad to the main squad in 2014, Ruan Smith has made himself a dependable game-day regular. Born in South Africa, Smith moved to Brisbane from Cape Town at 16 where he was selected to play for the Australian Schoolboys. He then moved back to South Africa for his final year of school and was quickly called up to join the South African Schoolboys, thus putting him into a select group of players who have represented both nations at that level. Smith then progressed to start his Super Rugby career off the bench with the Force, making appearances against the Blues and Crusaders. These brief cameos didn’t go unnoticed by the Brumbies who swooped in to sign him for the 2013 season. Smith’s maiden campaign in the capital was a productive one to say the least; making eight appearances, earning a starting berth in a victory against the British & Irish Lions, as well as featuring in the entire 2013 Finals Series. Continuing to impress in 2014 and 2015, Smith has established himself as a key cog in the Brumbies machine and he will look to continue that momentum into 2016.
