Paige Penning had been playing basketball her entire life and her job in the sport saw her always outside and her role was to physically make it hard for the other team. Penning didn’t ever dribble or shoot. Her basketball coach was Wallaby eight Peter Lucas, she was just training for the wrong sport. Despite always having an interest in the game, living in Goulburn didn’t allow her the opportunity to play rugby until 2016 when she first played at a sevens tournament. Slowly the competition has grown, and the squad has developed into a larger team by recruiting and encouraging more girls to play.
Last year (2018) Penning played a season of rugby league, winning the Katrina Fanning Cup with Goulburn Stockman, and, while she enjoyed league it wasn’t scratching the same itch as union did, so Penning made the commitment to leaving basketball and making a full transition to rugby and the commitment to developing her skills in the game for 2019.
