An abrasive, authoritative and no frills lock, Matt Philip has stamped his authority as one of Melbourne Rebels first choice locks. He initially made his way in the game turning out for Sydney University in the Shute Shield where his form earned him a call up to the Sydney Stars squad ahead of the inaugural National Rugby Championship in 2014.

He made 15 appearances for the Stars across two seasons and scored two tries in that time. Philip's rise to Super Rugby level was a swift one as an injury crisis in the Western Force's second row saw him cross Australia from Sydney to Perth to train with them during the 2016 mid-year rugby union internationals break.

Philip received a call-up to the Wallabies 2017 Spring Tour squad and made his Test debut the following week against Japan in Tokyo.

Represented Australian Schools against Tonga, Fiji, Samoa and New Zealand Schools.

Selected in the Australian U20s squad to the sixth-annual IRB Junior World Championship tournament in France but missed the tournament due to injury.

Selected in the Australian U20s squad to the seventh-annual IRB Junior World Championship tournament in New Zealand.

Philip won his first Test cap off the bench when he replaced Adam Coleman in the 63-30 victory over Japan in Yokohama.
