Outside back Jack Maddocks could very well be making a mark in cricket, instead of rugby. The Scots College, Sydney, alumni was a dual NSW Cricketer of the year winner in his age group and won a cricket scholarship with the University of Sydney. Maddocks only dabbled in rugby at school, playing only a handful of games in the third XV in his final year where there was no freedom to express yourself on the field. Initially he wasn’t going to play rugby in his final year in order to focus on study but ended up starting a handful of games in the 3rd XV. In 2016, Maddocks played colts for Shute Shield club Eastern Suburbs, while also pursuing first grade cricket with Easts, and was picked for the NSW U20s before he received a call up for the Australian U20s. His impressive form in that championship snagged him a Super Rugby contract with the Rebels and by the end of his first Super Rugby season, he had booked a ticket on Spring Tour as a Wallabies development player.

Maddocks played a starring role for the Australia U20s in a win over New Zealand in the Oceania U20s. The fullback was the only player to play every minute of Australia's World Rugby U20s Championship campaign, in which they finished sixth.

An impressive Super Rugby and NRC season earned him a development spot on the Wallabies' Spring Tour.
