The Australian Sevens sides have impressed on their return to the World Series.
The men's side were on the verge of defeating Olympic champions Fiji until a last-minute try from Iowane Raturaciri saw the powerful Pacific islanders emerge as 17-12 victors at the Dubai Sevens.
Australia had come from behind to lead 12-10 with time almost up on Friday but replacement Raturaciri came through with his maiden try in his first world series match.
Both teams had already qualified for the quarter-finals before their meeting, but defeat means that the Australians have been charged with the more difficult last-eight clash against South Africa, the defending Dubai and world series champions, on Saturday (5:50 pm AEDT).
Tries from Josh Turner and Ben Dowling had given the Australians the lead to answer an early score from Fiji's Iowane Teba before the dramatic conclusion.
Earlier in the day, Australia had overpowered Canada 35-19 with five tries, and France 17-10 with three more to book their last-eight spot.
Meanwhile, the women's side have established themselves as one of the teams to beat after a dominant start to their tournament.
In a rematch from the Olympics, an opening try to Sharni Williams was enough to break the American defence, with tries to Faith Nathan and new captain, Demi Hayes, following in quick succession.
Hayes continued her on-field offensive right from the kick-off of the second half, crossing for her second try before Lily Dick followed moments after. Ilona Maher was next to cross, bringing the Americans into the match before Australia closed it out, with Sariah Paki and Maddison Levi also adding to the scorecard.
They would back this up against Spain, with Charlotte Caslick opened the scoring in the first two minutes which was quickly followed by Dom Du Toit and Faith Nathan with tries of their own.
Caslick got another two tries taking her only one try away from a historic century in her career, as the side put another three tries in total to bring the final score to 34-0.
The Women's Aussie 7s side will play Brazil (4:22pm AEDT) and (France 7:23pm AEDT), with wins against both sides booking their place in the final.
