Penrith is set to the final addition to the Shute Shield in 2020 as the competition edges closer to a potential restart.

SRU president Phillip Parsons said last month that the competition would be aiming for a July 25 kick-off of a 12-team competition with three weeks of finals.

The choice for the final team was between the Emus and the possible inclusion of a Newcastle side.

On Friday night, the Emus releeased a statement on social media confirming their involvement in the competition this season.

Emus president Doug McColl said they were "delighted" to be part of the shortened competition.

"We are delighted to accept the invitation from the SRU to compete in an abridged Shute Shield competition in 2020," he said.

"Our re-entry into the competition is just our first step into the growth and development of not only the club but rugby in Western Sydney as well.

"A lot of hard work has been undertaken by the club since we last competed in 2018, for example our Board of Directors have met every single month during the hiatus working towards this moment. However, we’re not getting ahead of ourselves.

It is unclear whether the Emus will remain in the Shute Shield going forward based on this decision but McColl said they were cautiously optimistic about their future.

"The hard work is being done and there’s an enormous amount to do. We are not looking at coming back just to exist, we are coming back to be competitive and to get Rugby back on the map for the young men and women of Sydney’s west."

Penrith were axed from the Shute Shield competition in 2018 after a run of poor results and what the board said was an inability to field teams.

In the statement, the Emus also confirmed John Muggleton would be coming on board as the team's coach.
