New South Wales will take on ACT and Queensland will take on Combined States in the semi-finals of the Australian Schoolboys Rugby Championships on Thursday after all four sides registered wins on the opening day.

Reigning champions NSW Schoolboys 1 began the day at Riverview College in Sydney by downing Queensland Schoolboys 2 by 27-0, with Barker College prop Adrian Brown crossing twice, along tries from with centre Dan O’Brien (Joeys) and Jack Mossman (Scots).

Though missing a number of players from top schools, Queensland Schoolboys 1 then turned on a superb performance to beat NSW Schoolboys 2 36-21, with highly-rated St Columban’s centre Jonte Connolly grabbing a double.

The ever-dangerous ACT Schoolboys struggled to assert dominance ocer the Cavalier Barbarians side but they secured a 26-20 win courtesy of two tries from Erindale College no.8 Willie Delamere, and one each to Junior Tupous (St Edmunds College) and Ted Peason (Dickson College).

Another Canberra speedster, St Eddie’s wing Harry Buckley, scored to helped the Combined States team claim a narrow 27-24 win over the Victorian Schoolboys. The southerners were right in the game courtesy of two tries from Camberwell High School’s wing Rupeni Niubalavu, but the Combined States notched the win, with centre Norwin Latu (Eaglevale High), wing James Bragg (St Pius) and fullback Harry Snook (Calrossy) also scoring.

The next round of three-day carnival will see the winners battle it out for a place in the final on Saturday.
