The Australian Women’s Sevens have gone ‘Vogue’ ahead of the upcoming Sydney Sevens tournament, which kicks off on Friday February 3 at Allianz Stadium.
The Olympic Champions, appearing in the latest edition of the Vogue Magazine, showcased their talents in front of a different lens as part of a shoot on Maroubra beach in Sydney’s East.
The rise of the Women’s Sevens program has been rapid since winning gold in Rio, taking out the AIS Sport Performance Awards Team of The Year in December last year, with many media outlets calling them the ‘hottest property in women’s sport’, which Vogue was quick to endorse.
The Vogue feature, which hits the shelves this week, includes seven of the Olympic squad members, with co-captains Sharni Williams and Shannon Parry, alongside teammates Charlotte Caslick, Emma Tonegato, Chloe Dalton, Emilee Cherry and Alicia Quirk.
One of the stars of 2016, Emilee Cherry is still coming to terms with the new-found fame of the sport in Australia.
“I think you always dream about becoming a world or an Olympic Champion, but being in Vogue Magazine is just a bit surreal!
“It was a cool experience doing the shoot at Maroubra beach and all of the team at Vogue Magazine were incredible to work with.
“It is a new space for us (Vogue Magazine), so hopefully a new audience will be exposed to our sport and culture within our group – who knows the next Shannon Parry or Charlotte Caslick could be reading this article!”
“As a team we’re all behind the concept of leaving the sport in a better place than when we first came together and I think it’s fair to say this type of exposure is part of that."
This year’s Sydney Sevens will be the first time the Women’s sport will compete at the same time as the men’s and forward Chloe Dalton is optimistic that the tournament will generate greater participation for Women in grassroots level.
“Now that we’ve had the exposure of people watching us play at the Olympics we want to continue to showcase women’s rugby in Sydney and get people into it at the grassroots level.”
Although the immediate success of the sport following their gold medal was clear, Cherry said the team was still riding the highs, but fully aware of the need to remain grounded.
