The Brumbies will be getting a fresh addition to their front row in the 2017 season with the signing of explosive prop Nic Mayhew.
Auckland-born Mayhew joins the Brumbies from the Blues, where he played 11 matches over two Super Rugby seasons, after spending four years in the UK Premiership.
Mayhew said he couldn’t wait to join a front row that includes a handful of capped Wallabies, including recent Test debutant Allan Alaalatoa.
“I’m very much looking forward to linking with the current Australian Conference champions,” Mayhew said.
“Being able to work alongside international props such as Scott Sio, Ben Alexander and Allan Alaalatoa will really push me each week.”
The talented prop played in the Aviva Premiership for the Harlequins from 2011, before his time in the UK was cut short due to injury in 2014.
An impressive provincial season with North Harbour on his return to New Zealand earned him a call up to debut with Blues Super Rugby side in 2015.
Brumbies head coach Stephen Larkham said Mayhew would add an element of depth and a touch of diversity to the ACT forwards stocks.
“He’s a solid player with good talent at the set piece, defensively he’s very strong as well,” he said.
“He’s come through a tough development program at the Blues and North Harbour and has shown over the past two seasons of Super Rugby that he is ready for the next step in his career.”
Mayhew said he hoped to draw on his teammates and coaches to help develop his game in a new environment.
“The goal for me is to continue to improve my game and contribute to the team however I can, so I feel very fortunate to have this opportunity with the Brumbies”, he said.
“The Brumbies set-piece is one of the best in Super Rugby and under the guidance of their coaching staff, I really think I can take my game to a new level.”
The announcement comes with the news that South African prop Ruan Smith will not be returning to the Brumbies in 2017, despite initially extending his contract to the end of next season.
