Michael and Dean Oakman-Hunt are still over the moon about their first Buildcorp National Rugby Championship game together being a semi-final victory over the Melbourne Rising.

Michael, who had been injured since the beginning of the season, made his NRC debut off the bench and played a big role in the continued dominance of the Vikings forwards.

Michael said he was stoked to make his debut.

“Better late then never, it was really really good and I’m very happy” Oakman-Hunt said.

Oakman-Hunt’s first touch of the ball in the NRC probably wasn’t as he imagined it, the loose forward running onto a Christian Lealiifano kick and regathering the ball.

“First touch probably wasn’t what I expected,” Oakman-Hunt joked.

“Usually I’m not in the backline, my head’s usually in the scrum. I was definitely surprised by it.”

Dean Oakman-Hunt said he was pleased for his brother.

“It was awesome,” Oakman-Hunt said.

“Just see to him run on and come off the bench, it was absolutely amazing and I couldn’t be happier for him.”

Both men said they were extremely excited to play in the grand final next week.

“It would’ve been nice to have a home grand final but just to be a part of one, what more could we ask for?” Michael said.

Dean said the team had set themselves the goal of getting to the grand final.

“We talked about having the opportunity and I think we went out there and played the full 80 to get ourselves there, I’m really proud of the boys.” Dean said.

The University of Canberra Vikings will take on Brisbane City in the Grand Final of the Buildcorp National Rugby Championship at Ballymore on Saturday the 31st of October, kickoff at 3pm local time / 4pm AEDT
