Australian Rugby Union today thanked outgoing Minister for Sport, Senator Mark Arbib, and welcomed Senator Kate Lundy to the portfolio after she was officially sworn in this morning.

ARU Managing Director and CEO, John O’Neill AO, thanked Senator Arbib for his hard work and dedication and said the appointment of Senator Lundy was well deserved and good news for Australian Sport.

“Senator Arbib has been a tireless advocate for Australian sport,” Mr O’Neill said.

“He was an outstanding Sports Minister with an innate understanding of his portfolio and the importance of sport in the Australian society.

“While it is disappointing to see Senator Arbib depart the portfolio I have no doubts that Senator Lundy will continue to provide Sport with a strong voice.

“The Prime Minister’s decision to appoint Senator Lundy as the new Minister for Sport shows a continued commitment to sport in Australia ensuring it is provided with a representative who is willing to champion the needs of sport at the cabinet table.

“Having worked with Minister Lundy during her time as the opposition spokeswoman for Sport I know she is serious when she says that she sees sport as a critical area of social policy.

“Her knowledge and understanding of Australia’s sporting landscape combined with the fact that she is a passionate and vocal supporter of sport in Australia is great news for all sports no matter how big or small.

“We look forward to continuing the work started with Senator Arbib and working closely with Minister Lundy.”
