The Aussie Pearls have defeated a development USA side, Serevi Rugby at the Coral Coast Sevens 19 -7 to win the tournament on Saturday.
The result was the last chance for Head Coach, Tim Walsh to test out his charges before the commencement of the IRB Women’s Sevens series kicking off on 4 December in Dubai.
Speaking to ARU Media, Tim Walsh said there weas a lot of positives to take out of the tournament.
“We’re happy with the result. We wanted to finalise our preparations for Dubai and this tournament gave us an excellent opportunity to do that.
“The USA teams gave us a really good match and were very physical in the final.
“Coming away from the tournament with a win will give us more confidence and is effectively excellent preparation for Dubai.
“Full credit to Shannon Parry who led from the front but everyone was pretty consistent across the squad.
“I’m very happy with Taleena Simon. Taleena came in for her debut and has continued on her improvement from all her excellent work at training.”
The Aussie Pearls got off to a great start with a 36-7 win over PNG and 55-0 win over the Lady Babas.
A combination of power and the Aussie Pearls’ speedy backs allowed them to account for the Americans in the hotly contested final.
The Australian Women’s Sevens side will now turn its focus on starting the IRB Women’s Sevens Series with a tournament win in Dubai as their journey to Olympic success Rio begins.
Joining the Australians in Pool B is Spain, France and South Africa.
