It was their equal-best finish of the 2014-15 season, with the team also coming second in the final tournament, in London.
The men beat Kenya, South Africa and England to progress to the Cup quarter-final, against Scotland.
Australia bested the Scots 22-17 in the final eight, setting up a semi-final match up against ultimate World Series winners Fiji, who they beat 29-24.
The Blitzbokke proved a more challenging prospect in the Cup final, in a tense affair.
Scores were level going into half-time but a second-half flurry saw South Africa pull away for a 33-7 win.
