Ben Alexander started the 2012 Spring Tour with 45 Tests to his name so is well poised to become just the fourth Australian prop to reach his half century. His inclusion in a side to take on the British & Irish Lions in 2013 will therefore add much experience and aptitude to the forward pack.
Alexander overcome a serious knee ligament injury in the opening Test of 2010 to score his first Test try against Wales on that year’s Spring Tour, after being forced to miss the domestic Tests while he rehabilitated. Since returning from injury Alexander has been a constant feature of the Australian forward pack. So much so, that he has missed just three Test appointments since his return from injury - playing 27 of the available 30 Tests.
Alexander has been used regularly on both sides, spending most of 2010 - 2012 playing on the loosehead side for the Brumbies in Super Rugby and at tight-head in Tests. That versatility has undoubtedly assisted with Alexander’s record of selection.
He scored seven tries for the Brumbies in the 2010 season alone, finishing the year as the team’s top try-scorer. Alexander made his debut in Super Rugby against the Queensland Reds in 2008 and was playing for the Qantas Wallabies just a few months later, making his debut as a replacement in the first of the two June Tests against France.
He remained a loosehead until his second season, making the switch for the back half of the 2009 Tri Nations when he was tried at tight-head as a successor to Australia’s most capped prop, Al Baxter. Such was his impact operating in the new role, Alexander finished that year as one of just four players to feature in all 14 games played by the Qantas Wallabies.
