The Rugby League convert and AFL recruit made his debut with the NSW Waratahs in a Super Rugby trial match against the Melbourne Rebels in Hobart at the weekend and showed signs that he could be a Lion tamer in 2013.
Despite his impressive form during his first Rugby outing on the weekend, fans seem to be torn as to whether he will step up and join the Men in Gold against the best that England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales Rugby has to offer.
On debut as Fullback, he made a significant impact in the Waratahs 24 – 16 win over the Rebels, crossing the line for two tries. Despite receiving a yellow card for a breakdown infringement both Waratahs’ new Coach Michael Cheika and Qantas Wallabies Coach Robbie Deans seemed impressed.
The game, played in front of almost 10,000 spectators at North Hobart Oval is just the start for Folau, with a huge 2013 Super Rugby season now ahead of him.
The NSW Waratahs are set to take on the might of New Zealand’s Crusaders in their next trial match on February 14 at Allianz Stadium in Sydney before their Super Rugby season officially kicks against the Reds in Brisbane a week later, in round two of the 2013 Super Rugby season following a first round bye.
Tahs supporters and Rugby fans alike will have a keen eye on Folau as he makes his way through this year’s Super Rugby battles to see if he has what it takes to pull on the Gold jersey and take on the Lions when they visit Australian shores in June for a Tour that’s been 12 Years In the Making.
With just two days left in this week’s poll, be sure to have your say – should Israel Folau be named to take on the British & Irish Lions in a Wallabies jersey? Have your say now.
