While the Australian Women’s Sevens team were away on the world stage in China playing in the third leg of the IRB Women’s Sevens Series, the next generation of Women’s Sevens stars had the chance to shine on their own big stage. Sydney’s Allianz Stadium hosted the HSBC Waratahs vs. Emirates Western Force game at the weekend with this half-time exhibition game.
After the recent NSW selection trials held at the Rockdale Rugby Club, a 30-person squad was selected to start a series of training and trials, as coaches decide the final squad to contest the National Women’s Sevens Championships in April.
As part of the trial process, the girls were invited to be part of the half-time action, and contested a spirited seven minute game and had the halftime crowd on their feet.
The NSW squads continue with a comprehensive schedule of trials and training to determine the successful girls’ squad for the Nationals, held at St Ignatius College, Sydney. This is a key event for talent-spotters looking to boost the National Women’s Sevens squad. With Rugby Sevens debuting at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil, this is a great pathway opportunity. The tournament will see the current squad playing for their respective states.
