The Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development Team Inc. annual fundraising dinner was held this week in Sydney and did not disappoint. Greats of the game including Classic Wallabies Gary, Mark and Glen Ella, founder and history-maker Lloyd McDermott joined modern day favourite Waratah winger Lachie Turner and his coach Michael Cheika, in support of this celebrated organisation.

The LMRDT Inc. was established in 1995, and concentrates on the Rugby Union development of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth. This is the vehicle for the primary goal - for school-aged boys and girls to see education as paramount and staying in school as a priority.

Dinner guests had the opportunity to take part in a live auction, raising funds for the Team’s first European Rugby tour, with the National Indigenous U17’s team heading to France and Belgium later this year. Playing Rugby will, of course, be the centrepiece of the tour. However a focus on history and the connection to Australia will see a visit to the battlefields of Belgium and Northern France, particularly areas that commemorate the Indigenous Australian involvement in the First World War, including a visit to the grave of Private William Allan Irwin of the 33rd Battalion AIF, an Aboriginal soldier who received the Distinguished Conduct Medal for gallantry and devotion to duty in France on August 31st 1918.

The team will have the opportunity to train with the most famous names in French Rugby, including Thierry Dusautoir, former captain of the French National team and Stade Toulousain’s flanker and play against the best French teams in the U17’s division.
