Australian Rugby Union today announced the draw for this year’s National Under 16 Rugby Championship to be held at St Ignatius College, Riverview from Monday 1 to Friday 5 October.
The four day annual Rugby Championship is now in its 11th year and will feature 12 teams from across Australia competing for one of three National U16 Championship titles.
Teams are split into two divisions with Division 1 games commencing on Monday 1 October and Division 2 joining the action the following day.
Winners of each division receive one of three trophies, the Rod McQueen Shield awarded to the Division1 Champions, the Nick Farr-Jones Shield awarded to the Division 1 Plate Champions and the John Eales Shield awarded to the Division 2 Champions.
The National U16 Championship provides a rewarding educational experience for all participants, giving players the opportunity to go up against the best U16 Rugby talent in Australia.
It’s also a great opportunity for up-and-coming Rugby talent to highlight their skills to Australian Rugby Union High Performance Coaching Staff and National Talent Scouts who will be in attendance.
The National U16 Championship have been an important step for a growing number of Qantas Wallabies including Michael Hooper, Dom Shipperley, Pat McCabe, David Pocock, Berrick Barnes, James Horwill, Quade Cooper, Will Genia, Tatafu Polota-Nau and Kurtley Beale.
Last year’s 2011 Division 1 Champions, Queensland Red will be looking to defend their title against the Sydney Juniors, Victoria, Brumbies, NSW Schools, Queensland White, Western Australia and NSW Country.
The National Indigenous squad will be looking to hold on to their Division 2 title from last year and make it nine National U16 Championship title wins since 2001.
Run by the Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development Team, the National Indigenous side will need to fend off the likes of South Australia, Northern Territory and Tasmania in Division 2 to seal their victory for a second straight year.
The National U16 Championship kicks off at 9.30am on Monday 1 October at Sydney’s St Ignatius College in Riverview. Entry is free and fans are encouraged to get down and support the next crop of Australian Rugby stars in action.
