Green Point Christian College win NSW Primary School Sevens

A crowd of several thousand gathered at Allianz Stadium ahead of the Qantas Wallabies’ final Test of the Castrol EDGE Wales Tour on Saturday to watch the Cup and Plate finals of the NSW Primary School Sevens.

 

Competing as the curtain raiser to the Qantas Wallabies v Wales, Green Point Christian College claimed the Cup Final with a 30-10 win over St. Aloysius College, while the Plate Final was contested by Mascot Primary School and St. Xavier’s Gunnedah, with Mascot emerging 40-5.

 

In the Cup Final, the State champions from the Central Coast thrilled the crowd with fast footwork to triumph over a gallant St. Aloysius College outfit from Sydney North.

 

Green Point started strong and dominated territory and possession from the start of the game, scoring two tries in the first three minutes. St. Aloysius came surging back and took advantage of some dominant field position to reduce the margin to one try, but Green Point bounced back from the subsequent restart and closed the first half up 15-5.

 

A quick try at the start of the second half saw Green Point take a commanding 20-5 lead. St. Aloysius fought back to close the deficit by half, but couldn’t withstand the Green Point attack and finished on the wrong side of the scoreboard.

 

The Plate Final saw Sydney South representatives Mascot jump out to an early lead and command the majority of possession to emerge deserving victors of Central North representatives St. Xavier’s.

 

 

ARU Program Manager of Sevens and Women’s Rugby, Dale Roberson, said it was thrilling to see the State finals played in front of such a receptive crowd.

 

“It was fantastic to see primary school students representing schools from across NSW playing in front of such a large crowd,” Mr Roberson said.

 

“The players had definitely earned the opportunity having qualified from the previous day’s games and regional rounds earlier in the year.

 

“Rugby Sevens is an ideal format for new and existing players to come together, compete but most importantly have fun and meet new people.”
