‘First Steps on the Road to Rio’
The Australian Rugby Union, would like to invite your school to take part in theWestern Sydney Schoolgirl 7s Festival, to be held on Thursday 7th June 2012 from 9am to 2:30pm at Granville Park Montrose Ave Merrylands.
Rugby Sevens, an Olympic Sport for Men and Women in 2016, is an exciting, fast flowing game played with seven (7) players as opposed to the traditional 15-a-side game. It is less structured than the 15s format and participants with no rugby experience can pick up the game relatively quickly.
To introduce girls to the game of Rugby Sevens, the Western Sydney Schoolgirl 7s Festival will provide skills training and non-contact ‘tag’ games, played on a half-field, to develop core-skills and an understanding of the game. The day will also feature an U18 Tackle division so younger girls can see how the game is played with ‘full-contact’.
Coaching will be provided by ARU Community Development Staff.
The Western Sydney Schoolgirl Sevens Festival will also act as a selection opportunity for the U18 Metropolitan Schoolgirls Representative Team.
Playing Format: 7 a side (12 players per squad)
Under 14s – Tag Sevens Under 16s – Tag Sevens Under 18s – Tag Sevens or Tackle
On offer: Coaching from ARU Staff and Current National and State Women’s Players
An introduction to an Olympic sport
Multiple Games against a cross-section of schools throughout Western Sydney
Possible selection in the U18 Metropolitan Schoolgirls Representative Team
