Six primary schools from Sydney’s East, South and Inner West descended upon Centennial Park’s Mackay Oval last Wednesday to compete in the NSW Primary School Sevens Tournament.
Last year’s State Primary finalists Mascot Public School again showed they would be side to watch in 2012 securing a spot in the NSW State finals for the second year in a row while Holy Family – Menai claimed the runners-up position.
South Coogee Public, Newington, Randwick Public and Trinity Grammar rounded out the final places after a tightly contested day of competition.
All six of the schools competing on the day had qualified for the Centennial Park based tournament after making it through their specific regional days held around the Eastern Suburbs, Southern Districts and Inner West.
All teams played a modified version of Rugby Sevens - cross field Sevens, which is a unique fast-flowing game, that can be enjoyed by new and existing players to the game.
A feature of the day was Sydney Boys High School providing all participants with a canteen, and students from SBHS first XV acting as officials and ground marshals throughout the day.
The fast, fun and exciting sport of Rugby Sevens has continued to grow in popularity both in Australia and around the world following its inclusion in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro.
