The 2011/2012 Sydney Junior Gold Program selections have been announced today inviting over 175 players aged between 15 and 18 years of age into the high performance talent development program coordinated by the Australian Rugby Union (ARU). The program forms an important part of the ARU’s Pathway to Gold program – the national talent development program designed to develop and select players U15 and above for future representation at the highest levels of Rugby.

The program received over 400 nominations from Sydney’s most talented young players, with 90% of the players’ nominated coming from the Junior Club Rugby system. Program coordinator Hugh Carpenter of the ARU rated the selection process extremely difficult and encouraged all players – whether selected or not – to continue to challenge themselves to become better players.

“Unfortunately we cannot include every player that nominates as we recognise that players develop at different rates and some players left out of the 2011/2012 program may still go on to become outstanding rugby players. Selection in this program does not guarantee any further representative opportunities – players will be required to set and maintain high levels of performance and attitude throughout the program as this is what’s required if they are to go on and play SuperRugby or for the Wallabies” commented Carpenter.

The players selected represent all regions of Sydney, indicating a genuine desire by the ARU to provide access and opportunities to all players in Sydney to be part of a high performance talent development program. The Junior Gold Program is conducted out of 23 centres across Australia ensuring a nationwide capture of the best Rugby talent and introducing them to high performance development – both on and off the field.

“We are fortunate to have some very good Talent Scouts throughout Sydney, and have accessed quality information from various Junior Club Rugby bodies and schools to select the group. By bringing players of high ability together in a program like this, the quality of practice and training increases immediately and all players will be challenged to be better. Of the current Wallaby squad in New Zealand waiting to contest the 3rd/4th playoff, every player under 24 years of age has come through the Pathway to Gold program. These players displayed ability, but more importantly a work ethic and extremely high standards that has enabled them to reach such a high level at a young age. We will see many of these young Junior Gold Program players progress through the high level Rugby programs and systems available and one day reach the pinnacle of our sport and play for the Wallabies – perhaps even in time for the next World Cup in 2015.”

The Sydney Junior Gold Program will commence in early November and run through through to March next year before the players embark on their various competition and representative pathways. Players selected for the 2011/2012 program are:
