Fearless in the tackle, durable and brilliant with the ball, Davis was a Rugby immortal.

From 1963-72 he played 105 matches for Australia including 39 tests, 16 as captain. During this same period he played 126 matches for the Drummoyne District Rugby Football Club and was captain from 1966 to 1972.

He was rated the finest breakaway to play for Australia.

He died of a brain tumour on 24 July 1979 just short of age 40. This weekend’s Rugby Festival marks 32 years since his death.

Drummoyne and Australian Rugby legend Greg Davis will this weekend be remembered at a special Rugby Festival in his honour, with the new Drummoyne Oval grandstand to be named after the former Wallaby.

The day kicks off with the Under 14s taking the field at 11am, followed by the Drummoyne Under 21 Colts side at midday.

At 1.20pm, the City of Canada Bay Mayor’s Invitational XV will play the Vintage Reds, and don’t miss the main game when Sydney play Drummoyne at 2.30pm.

ARU President Ron Graham said it is befitting Wallaby great Davis will be immortalised at his beloved Drummoyne Oval, through the grandstand unveiling.

"It is fitting that today the grandstand at his beloved Drummoyne Oval is named in honour of Greg Davis – a Dirty Reds legend who represented Australia in 39 Tests from 1963 to 1972 and captained his country in 16 of them,” Graham said.

“From South Africa to New Zealand, from the British Isles, Ireland and France to his home Test arenas in Australia, Greg wore the Wallabies jumper with pride and played with a passion that spoke wonders about his leadership abilities.

“His legacy to the game, after his passing at the too-young age of 39 in 1979, remains strong even now. The respect in which the Greg Davis name is held is clearly evidenced by the stature of those taking part in elements of this Rugby Festival.”
