QLD Country Blue Heelers have contributed to a highly successful week for Queensland sporting teams, defeating the Northern Territory Mosquitoes and Adelaide Black Falcons to take out the inaugural Integrated Tri Series, contested between the three teams over three days at Darwin’s Austar Rugby Park. The series was decided with the final match, featuring the Falcons and Heelers. With both teams posting first match wins over the home town Mosquitoes, the third and final match became a virtual tournament Final, and provided a match befitting such an occasion. Queensland Country prevailed 13-11 in a highly entertaining and physical contest.
Heelers’ Dave Harrold starred for the winners, scoring all of his team’s points and controlling the match expertly from fly half. Harrold scored a converted try in the 19th minute, and kicked two penalty goals for a decisive tally of 13 points. The Falcons only try, scored by centre Warren Duff in the 74th minute, brought them within two points of the Heelers. With the match in the balance for the final minutes, Queensland Country were able to control territory and possession, denying Adelaide point scoring opportunities and escaping with a deserved victory.
In earlier tournament matches, QLD Country were too strong for the Mosquitoes, claiming a comfortable 54-12 win on Saturday (July 9th) evening, less than 24 hours after the Mozzies lost 32-5 to the Adelaide Black Falcons in the opening match of the series.
