This year’s win over The Scots College makes it back to back wins for the Lloyd McDermott Development Team who combined speed and skill to overcome the host team.

Sydney delivered the perfect Easter Saturday for this third Schoolboy Rugby Sevens. An exciting line up, including international newcomers from New Zealand, Palmerston North Boys High, and Papua New Guinea, OTML Schoolboys, promised a day filled with great rugby. Closer to home, Western Australia was represented for the first time with a team from Aranmore Catholic College, joining Queensland, NSW and ACT teams in the Sydney tournament.

A day filled with great rivalries and sportsmanship saw the Grand Final played between hosts Scots College and the Lloyd McDermott U18s, or Lloydies as they are affectionately known. The game was drawn at 19 - 19 and went into golden point.

After what looked like a certain try to Scots in the left hand corner in the opening minute of golden point, a try-saving tackle produced a turn over and several plays later Lloydies broke away to clinch the match with a 50m try under the posts.

Outstanding play was seen from Lloydies James Widders-Leece and Bevan French, and Scots players Oli Kemp, Angus Creighton and Ben Starkey.

The day also saw the girls get stuck in with two exhibition games. The first, a touch game between local schools Kambala and SCEGGS Redlands, and later the girls upped the ante with a Grand Final curtain raiser of full contact Sevens between NSW U18 Development Squad players and Endeavour Sports High School.

A well-organised and fun day was had all round, with a giant screen for replays, live commentary, giveaways and a kids fun zone. ARU CEO Bill Pulver joined an enthusiastic crowd, with ARU Development Staff and HPU Coaches in attendance over seeing all the action.

As NSW highest placed team, Scots College secures itself a place in the NSW Schoolboys Sevens tournament held in September, which sees the state’s top 12 teams play off for the Championship.
