The Island Barbarians have claimed the 2013 Country Carnival in their first year in existence, defeating reigning champions, the Kalgoorlie Stormers, 28-24, in the final at Morley yesterday.
In a sign of the growth of Rugby in country Western Australia and in particular the Eastern Goldfields, the competition’s top three sides hailed from the region, with the Barbarians, Stormers and last year’s runners-up, the Kalgoorlie Bushwackers, filling the podium.
The Island Barbarians overcame tight early encounters against Dunsborough (15-8) and the Bushwackers (5-3) on Day One – as well as a tournament high 71-0 thrashing of the Geraldton Internationals and a 25-0 win over Esperance – to set up their grand final showdown with the similarly undefeated Stormers.
The weekend’s competition also saw a return of the Esperance club, who provided the first major upset of the tournament with their 19-12 win over Boulder/WASM, and Katanning, who have also re-emerged as a club this season.
The Dunsborough Dungbeetles again flew the flag as the pre-eminent club from the South West competition while the experienced campaigners from Geraldton Internationals proved the sentimental favourites, despite failing to win a match in their four outings.
