Cottesloe 16 defeated Wests Scarborough 3 at Bennett Park, Scarborough
Nedlands 45 defeated Perth Bayswater 17 at Pat O’Hara Reserve, Morley
Associates 25 defeated Kalamunda 18 at Allen Park, Swanbourne
Palmyra 32 defeated Rockingham 18 at Lark Hill Sports Complex, Port Kennedy
UWA 30 defeated Wanneroo 27 at McGillivray Oval, Mt Claremont

Cottesloe’s golden run in the Pindan Premier Grade has continued against Wests Scarborough yesterdaywith the undefeated Gulls winning 16-3 at Bennett Park.

A dominant first half laid the foundations for the win and was backed up by strong defence after the break despite the Gulls being reduced to 14 men for the final 15 minutes of the match.

Cottesloe coach Ian Fowler praised his side’s ability to keep the home side try-less.

“That was an outstanding defensive effort,” he said. “To be down to 14 men in the red zone and break out to score and put the game away is really pleasing.

“Wests pride themselves on scoring points and to keep them to just three today was fantastic – that probably hasn’t happened to them too many times before.”

Wests Scarborough coach Dwayne Grace said today’s match was a good litmus test for his side against the competition front-runners.

“I’m really happy with how we went; the score doesn’t really reflect how competitive we were in parts but we will just go back and rebuild from this now and see what we can improve on,” he said.

“We peppered their line for ten minutes at the end and unfortunately we just couldn’t break through. One turnover and they ended up scoring down the other end of the field, and they’re the sort of side that really makes you pay like that.”

Cottesloe’s attacking mindset was clear from the first whistle with lock Ross Haylett-Petty grabbing the opening try after a Nick Haining line break.

From there the Wests Scarborough defence held strong until flanker Kane Koteka was sin-binned for a spear tackle with Cottesloe fullback Sam Christie taking the points on offer to give the visitors an 8-0 lead at half-time.

Wests flyhalf Teava TeRangi got his side on the board shortly into the new term before his penalty was negated immediately when Christie added his second.

When Cottesloe hooker Ben Whittaker received a red card for a dangerous tackle, momentum shifted heavily in favour of the home side.

While Wests camped themselves inside Cottesloe’s quarter they were unable to penetrate the line and it was the Gulls who stole the final try when winger Matt Richards finished off a Haylett-Petty intercept to round out the final 16-3 result.

In today’s other matches, Wanneroo was narrowly denied their first win of the season, going down to UWA, 30-27; Nedlands proved too strong for Perth Bayswater claiming a 45-17 win; Associates edged out Kalamunda, 25-18 at Allen Park; and Palmyra took the points against Rockingham, running out 14-point victors.
