While the Wallabies are in New Zealand aiming to secure an historic third Rugby World Cup hundreds of future stars turned out to North Narrabeen reserve on Tuesday as part of the Warringah Gala Day. More than 460 students from 12 schools took part in a ‘Rugby 10s’ competition that saw 33 teams battle it out in summer like conditions.

There was plenty of talent on show with two separate age categories, year 3/4 and year 5/6 and two divisions (division 1 and division 2) in each age category being contested.

In the year 3/4 competition Newport held out Willoughby in a tight contest 10-5 to take out the Division 1 title, while Killarney Heights defeated Newport 20-0 in Division 2.

St Augustine’s A secured the year 5/6 Division 1 title with an impressive 50-5 over the St Augustine’s B side, while Balgowlah North made sure Killarney Heights didn’t repeat their success in the year 3/4 Division 2 competition, defeating them 25-0 to secure the year 5/6 Division 2 title.

On Thursday around 450 year 3, 4, 5 and 6 students turned out to Cliff Oval in Wahroonga to battle it out in the ‘Rugby 10s’ Gordon Gala Day .

The day again was played in summer like conditions with plenty of skill, fun and good sportsmanship on show.

With 15 schools from around the area sending 32 teams to face off against each other the four titles up for grabs were hotly contested but at the end of the day congratulations must go to Gordon West, Castle Cove and Lindfield East.

Despite showing great determination Loquat Valley were unable to hold out a slick Gordon West outfit in the Division 2 year 3/4 competition with Gordon West running out 10-5 victors.

Castle Cove then took out the Division 1 title in the year 3/4 competition with a tightly contested 5-0 win.

In the year 5/6 competition it was Gordon West who once again proved too strong in Division 2 running out 25-0 winners over Sacred Heart in the final, while it was Lindfield East taking out the Division 1 title with a solid 25-5 win over Gordon West.

In total almost 1,000 students from Northern Sydney enjoyed two days of Rugby in a week that saw the Wallabies prepare to take on the Irish on Saturday.
