Australia’s Wallabies of the future are on display this week at the National Under 16 Championship being held in Sydney until Friday October 4th.
The five-day event features teams from every state and territory and a National Indigenous team.
Australian Rugby Union’s General Manager, Rugby Participation, Andrew Larratt said the Under 16 Championship is the first major step to ignite the passion for the next generation of Australian Rugby players and fans.
“There are strong family connections to the Wallabies on display this week, with the Queensland Red team featuring Wallaby Tim Horan’s son, Alex, and Angus Scott-Young who is the son of Wallaby Sam Scott-Young,” said Mr Larratt.
“The Queensland White team features Daniel Byrne, who is former Australian Captain John Eales’ nephew.
“We also see plenty of stories of ultimate commitment to reach the tournament and one this year is Kim Taualani from Robinvale on the Murray River, who regularly makes a ten hour return trip to Melbourne to train and prepare with his team mates.”
The tournament also features brothers Alan and Daniel Simpson in the Tasmanian team, and a number of players who will be competing in their second Under 16 Championship, including Jack McGregor for New South Wales Schools, Calvin Pritchard and Eli Pilz who’ll play for Queensland Red and Jacob Elordi and Sione Tuipoluto from Victoria.
Matches between 12 teams will be held throughout the week, with Division 1 Final to get underway at 11:40am on Friday at St. Ignatius College, Riverview.
In addition to the action on the field, budding match officials will attend a workshop on Tuesday 1 October and will get the opportunity to learn from former Test Match referee, Andrew Cole and current TNT Super Rugby referee Andrew Lees.
