LMRDT Sevens Rugby Tournaments

The marquee event for the Indigenous 7s rugby is the Ella 7s. Named after the famous Ella Brothers, Aboriginal Wallabies players who represented Australia during the 80’s, this tournament is getting bigger and better each year. In 2014, the Ella 7s will include Cairns, Brisbane and Coffs Harbour.

Hosting between 10 (Cairns) and 44 teams (Coffs Harbour) in both men’s and women’s divisions, with staff and spectators, it is expected that up to 2000 people will attend these events.

The LMRDT also have teams participating in international rugby competitions such as the Bangkok 7s, Kiama 7s, either the Manilla or Hong Kong 10s. These trips provide a rewarding experience, allowing our participants to discover new countries and culture through their passion for rugby. Proving to be a great launch pad for our next generation Rugby 7s players, the LMRDT participated in and won the 2013 Australian Schoolboy Rugby Sevens.

LMRDT Women's 7s
The LMRDT compete each year with a representative team in the National Women’s 7s Championships. The 2014 tournament was held in Canberra in March and saw great success for the “Lloydettes” who got better and better as the tournament went on, to eventually beat The Australian Barbarians Team on their second encounter to win the Plate final 33-5. From that tournament team captain Tallisha Harden and winger Taleena Simon were invited to train with the Australian Womens Sevens team with Taleena Simon eventually being offered a professional contract with the team, becoming the first Aboriginal women ever to do so.

The Eora Warriors U8s, U9s and U12s

The Eora Warriors are our Inner Sydney Juniors Club that participate in the Sydney Junior Rugby Competition from March to August. The team is based out of the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence, Redfern, where they train and play their home games. The team is all inclusive inviting kids from all backgrounds and cultures to come together to support one another for the love of the game. We have been very successful, combining both a rugby and social experience.

Please contact Mel Howie on 0414 256 600 or if you are interested in joining. To create an inclusive environment, we provide the kids with uniforms, coaching and playing fees.

U16s National Indigenous Championships

Due to the cancellation of the ARU National U16 Championships, LMRDT will not run the U16 National Indigenous Rugby Championships as it no longer offers a pathway for players. The LMRDT is reviewing program delivery to ensure it can continue to provide ongoing opportunities.
