A member of the Waratahs pathway since 2006, Pat McCutcheon was named captain of the Australian Sevens team in the 2009/10 IRB Series before being required for Super 14 duty. After making his Super Rugby in round 12 of the 2010 season, McCutcheon was then selected in the starting XV for the final two must-win games before featuring in the 2010 Super 14 semi-final against the Stormers. After representing Australian Barbarians against England, McCutcheon finished a stellar 2010 by captaining Australia at the Commonwealth Games.
