The Kings have clung to a 28-all draw at Canberra Stadium on Friday night with the visitors scoring under the posts after the bell to even the ledger.
It was a disappointing end to the match for the Brumbies, with the Kings managing to outscore the home side four tries to two in front of 12,063 fans. Despite boasting 65 per cent of the possession deep into the second half, the University of Canberra Brumbies couldn’t turn their momentum into points.
The match started in the University of Canberra Brumbies favour, with wingers Henry Speight and Joe Tomane managing to cross for five-pointers within 20 minutes of play.
But the Kings fought back to claim three points on the road with four tries sweetening the deal. The result will fill the Kings with plenty of confidence as they travel to Melbourne next week to tackle the Rebels.
“It’s a bit frustrating and not for the last couple of minutes, right from the start it was a tough to watch. We missed two kicks right at the start, we were 13-nill up then missed two conversions and gave them a sniff,” White said.
“I don’t think we played like that because we thought we were going to win, all week I’ve been saying that the only ones who are thinking like that are the media. It’s irrelevant to how we were thinking.
“They are a fairly typical South African side, very big forwards and a good quality goal kicker and we just gave them too many chances to come and get us.
“To get better we just have to be sure that we arrive back at Brumbies on Monday and make sure we are ready to make amends for tonight and to get things right for next weekend.”
The opening exchanges were all Brumbies, with Speight collecting a clever Christian Lealiifano kick to streak past the last defender and score in the right corner. Just minutes later, Tomane was in the opposite corner after Nic White cut five players out to hit his winger on the chest.
Siliva Siliva was impressive in his first run-on start, while Fotu Auelua was involved in plenty of work during the first 40 minutes.
Unfortunately for Brumbies fans the entertainment stopped there, with all the extras added off White and Lealiifano’s boots.
Two late penalties gave the Brumbies a seven point lead with just two minutes to play. But four consecutive decisions were handed to the Kings with 60 seconds to play, creating too much pressure for the Brumbies to maintain.
The University of Canberra Brumbies will fly to Dunedin on Tuesday to prepare for their next match against the Highlanders at Forsyth Barr Stadium.
