Queensland Rugby has launched a charity auction with eight exclusive items in an effort to raise more than $50,000 for flood-ravaged Fiji and to save the ‘fro of St.George Queensland Reds backrower Radike Samo.

Samo’s home village of Narewa, located near Nadi, was destroyed by the natural disaster which hit the Pacific Island nation last week, so as a way to raise funds the Reds veteran offered to shave off his trademark afro should the fundraising target not be reached before Queensland Rugby’s inaugural Ladies in Red cocktail function on May 10.

Since Queensland Rugby launched the fundraising initiative last week Samo’s plight has received a great response from Reds corporate partners who have generously donated auction prizes for the public to bid on through eBay.

Major sponsor Triple M and their Grill Team have thrown their weight behind the cause and will drive awareness of the auction during their morning breakfast show from Monday until the Reds match against the Stormers on Friday 20 April.

Auction items include the opportunity for two people to sit on the players’ bench alongside the Reds in their match against the Stormers; Samo’s Reds playing jersey signed by the entire team following the Brumbies match; and a fully catered 10-seat box to the Stormers match courtesy of the Reds and Spotless Catering.

Also on offer is 10-tickets to the Lady Gaga concert in June at BEC with pre-event catering thanks to AEG Ogden; a New York flight and accommodation package for two, courtesy of Korean Air; a year’s supply of Angove wine; a signed pair of boots from James Horwill; and a signed Wallabies Tri-Nations jersey.

The Stormers match will form the centre of Queensland Rugby’s fundraising efforts with members from the Brisbane Fijian community to be on hand to collect gold coin donations and a special performance by Fijian dancers in the pre-game entertainment.

Elite sponsor Carlton United Breweries could donate as much as $10,000 to the cause after pledging 30cents of every 425ml of Carlton Mid beer sold at the April 20 match, while Gilbert Sports has generously donated 50 Gilbert Footballs to the Fijian community.

All proceeds will go to supporting Samo’s home village of Narewa with $7240 already raised courtesy of $5,500 through donations made by supporters at the Brumbies game and through public donations.

Fans should also look out for Happy Dragon wearing a ‘fro with all 34 St.George Bank branches throughout Queensland taking donations.
Further public donations will also be gratefully accepted to the below account details:
