Rugby Sevens is now recognised as an Olympic sport and will make its debut at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil.

Following the success of the inaugural ‘Pathway to Gold’ trials in 2012, the Australian Rugby Union are preparing dates for further Women's Sevens trials in 2013.

Rebecca Tavo, Women’s Sevens Captain
Sevens is a fun, fast and exciting game and I am honoured to be the Australian captain. It’s taken me to some of the most amazing cities in the world from Dubai to Vegas and now it can also take you to Rio. This is an opportunity to represent your country, meet some great people, travel – and win a gold medal at the Olympic Games.
Emilee Cherry, Women’s Sevens Squad
Coming from touch football, it was exciting to try a new sport and now I represent Australia at Rugby Sevens. I have travelled all over the world, pushed my fitness and skills to another level playing a sport I love, and now have the chance to represent Australia at the 2016 Games in Rio and be called an Olympian.
Mo’onia Gerrard, Australian National Netballer
As a professional netballer I have experienced some great moments in my career including a silver medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games Silver. Although these have been great achievements, I still have the desire to compete in the Olympic Games; Rugby Sevens offers me this opportunity and I look forward to working towards this goal in 2016.
Senator Kate Lundy, Minister for Sport
With women’s rugby set to debut at the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016, now is the perfect opportunity for Australian women to embrace Rugby Sevens. Rugby is a great team sport and I have no doubt our Women’s Sevens team will take centre stage at the Games.
John Coates, AOC President
Rugby Sevens is a universal sport, offers absolute gender equity and has strong youth appeal. I have been a strong advocate for 50/50 participation for men and women at the Olympics for many years so it is pleasing to see rugby back on the Olympic program this time with women competing. We expect to be strong medal contenders in 2016.
