Dual world championship defender Mo'onia Gerrard will put her netball career on hold as she pursues the dream of representing Australia in Rugby Sevens at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in Brazil.
Gerrard has made herself unavailable for both Australian Diamonds selection for the 2013 internationals and next year’s domestic season.

“The decision to forgo selection was difficult to make, with the Commonwealth Games just over 12 months away but I’ve always harboured the dream of playing Rugby Sevens for Australia,” Gerrard said.
Rugby runs in the Gerrard family. Brother Mark is a former Wallaby with 23 caps for Australia.
Anthony Eddy, General Manager of Sevens, is pleased with Mo’onia’s decision to make the switch.
“We’ve been in discussions with Mo’onia for some time, and following previous involvement in training, it’s great to now be able to fully immerse her in the program.
“She is now in a position to attend all training camps for the upcoming season, which will begin after the World Cup.
“She is very athletic, and will be an asset to the program bringing with her professionalism and a wealth of experience.”
