The Qantas Men’s Sevens squad has bounced back from a poor showing in Dubai to claim Bowl honours in Port Elizabeth, South Africa at the final tournament of 2012 as part of the 2012-13 HSBC Sevens World Series.

The Australians defeated recent Dubai winners Samoa 26-14 on Day 2 of the tournament to take out the Bowl final in convincing fashion.

The Qantas Men’s Sevens opened the scoring in the second minute with a try to captain Con Foley, but trailed 14-5 at half time.

They were first to score again in the second half through Greg Jeloudev, with a successful conversion by Cam Clark bringing them within two points of the Samoans at 14-12.

They then scored twice through Laloifi Junior Laloifi and Peter Lee, who were both competing in just their second tournament. Clark added the extra conversion points on both occasions, while the Samoans were held scoreless in the final half.

Earlier on Day 2 the Qantas Men’s Sevens defeated Zimbabwe 24-14 in the Bowl quarter-final before overcoming Kenya 24-21 in the semi-final.

Day 1 saw the Australians suffer three losses to France, 31-5, Samoa, 26-7, and South Africa, 17-7.

The Qantas Men’s Sevens are currently ranked 10th on the HSBC Sevens World Series with 19 points after the first three rounds.

They will take a break from competition until the series resumes in Wellington, New Zealand, on 1-2 February 2013.
