The Qantas Women’s Sevens have won the Asia Pacific Women’s Sevens Championships with a 36-17 result against Japan in the tournament decider in Sabah, Malaysia over the weekend.

The result shows continued improvement in the side, which recently finished second to New Zealand at the Oceania Women’s Sevens Championships in Fiji.

The Australians emerged from pool play with three wins and a loss, after dismantling Chinese Taipei 59-0, beating Singapore 50-0 and Kazakhstan 12-0 while suffering a 14-10 loss to Japan.

The playoffs saw the Qantas Women’s Sevens defeat emerging talents Papua New Guinea 12-7 before heading to the Cup final to face Japan yet again.

The Australians were too strong in the final, with four tries shared between captain Rebecca Tavo, newcomer Gemma Etheridge, Sharni Williams and Cobie-Jane Morgan, along with one conversion from Katrina Barker.

Qantas Women’s Sevens coach Chris Lane used the tournament to continue to develop his side and expose new players to the rigours of international Rugby Sevens.

The Qantas Women’s Sevens will now shift their focus to a number of training camps and the upcoming Noosa Sevens and Paradise Sevens tournaments ahead of the 2012/13 IRB Women’s Sevens Challenge Cup and next year’s Women’s Rugby World Cup Sevens in Russia.
