The Qantas Women’s Sevens have defeated host side Netherlands 18-14 to claim third place at the Amsterdam Sevens this past weekend.

The tournament, which ran 19-20 May, featured 12 international teams, including five from the recent IRB Women’s Sevens Challenge Cup in London - Australia, Canada, England, Netherlands and USA.

The Qantas Women’s Sevens finished the pool stage with a perfect record, having dispatched Scotland 30-0, Germany 19-5 and Netherlands 14-5 on Day 1.

Day 2 saw the Australians hit a road block, falling 17-14 to USA in the Cup quarter-final before heading to the Plate semi-final, where they defeated Spain 19-7 to advance to the third-fourth playoff.

The final of the Amsterdam Sevens was an all North American affair, with Women’s Sevens powerhouses Canada and USA contesting the Cup. Canada chased down a 19-5 deficit to win 26-19, claiming the tournament title for the second year in a row.

The Qantas Women’s Sevens will now take a break from competition, following the 2011-2012 season which saw them attend IRB Women’s Sevens Challenge Cup events in Dubai, Hong Kong and London, before closing the season in Amsterdam.
