The Qantas Women’s Sevens have defeated host side Netherlands 18-14 to claim third place at the Amsterdam Sevens this past weekend.
The tournament, which ran 19-20 May, featured 12 international teams, including five from the recent IRB Women’s Sevens Challenge Cup in London - Australia, Canada, England, Netherlands and USA.
The Qantas Women’s Sevens finished the pool stage with a perfect record, having dispatched Scotland 30-0, Germany 19-5 and Netherlands 14-5 on Day 1.
Day 2 saw the Australians hit a road block, falling 17-14 to USA in the Cup quarter-final before heading to the Plate semi-final, where they defeated Spain 19-7 to advance to the third-fourth playoff.
The final of the Amsterdam Sevens was an all North American affair, with Women’s Sevens powerhouses Canada and USA contesting the Cup. Canada chased down a 19-5 deficit to win 26-19, claiming the tournament title for the second year in a row.
The Qantas Women’s Sevens will now take a break from competition, following the 2011-2012 season which saw them attend IRB Women’s Sevens Challenge Cup events in Dubai, Hong Kong and London, before closing the season in Amsterdam.
The Australian Youth Sevens Training Squads for the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games gathered at the Sydney Academy of Sport in Narrabeen over the weekend, with boys and girls enjoying a three-day selection camp.
