The Qantas Women’s Sevens have finished fourth in the IRB-sanctioned Women’s Sevens Challenge Cup, following a disappointing Day 2 in London.

Following a 3-0 sweep of pool play, the Qantas Women’s Sevens defeated USA 17-0 in the Cup quarter-final before a 14-12 loss to Netherlands sent them to the third-fourth playoff, which ended in a 19-14 loss to Canada.

The result is a disappointing one for the reigning world champions, who entered the tournament with the desire to improve on their last two showings, which saw them fail to make the final in Dubai late last year and finish runners up to England in Hong Kong earlier this year.

Day 1 saw the Qantas Women’s Sevens emerge unscathed from pool play, effecting damaging wins over their opponents, 27-5 over China, 29-0 over France and 22-5 over USA.

Prior to the tournament, coach Chris Lane spoke of the importance of ongoing improvement within his side and while the result in London wasn’t ideal, he would be happy to have introduced a further two young new players to the pressures of international Rugby.

While eight members of the squad named for London competed in both Dubai and Hong Kong, the side also included debutants Alicia Quirk and Amy Turner.

The third IRB-sanctioned Women’s Sevens Challenge Cup featured 12 teams and run in conjunction with the final round of the HSBC Sevens World Series in London.
