The Tokyo Sevens-winning Qantas Men’s Sevens will have one last hit out before the final two rounds of the HSBC Sevens World Series when they meet the New Zealand Sevens in an international exhibition match to be televised on Fox Sports 2HD and 2 this Sunday.
The match, which will kick off at 3:00pm and feature two 10-minute halves, will be shown on Fox Sports 2HD and 2 in the prime time spot of 6:30pm on Sunday evening directly following the FxPro Super Rugby clash between the HSBC Waratahs and the Crusaders.
The match will act as a curtain raiser to the HSBC Waratahs round 10 clash against the Crusaders at Allianz Stadium and will kick-off an afternoon of trans-Tasman rivalry not to be missed.
Qantas Men’s Sevens coach, Michael O’Connor, knows it will be an exciting affair and encouraged fans to get along to Allianz Stadium early to make the most of Rugby filled afternoon.
“It’s unusual to have a low-scoring game in 20 minutes of Sevens,” O’Connor said.
“I can guarantee there’ll be tries. Sevens is all about attack. We’ll take it to each other.
“This game is a real good opportunity for us to play against the best Sevens outfit in the world.
“It would be great to see Allianz Stadium full at 3:00pm on Sunday for the Sevens match and then have them stay for the Waratahs clash, which is sure to be a ripper as well.”
The Qantas Men’s Sevens are currently ranked sixth in the HSBC Sevens World Series, with their most recent tournament an overwhelming success, after defeating Samoa in a physical and closely fought Final to claim the Tokyo Sevens Cup.
The New Zealand side is currently ranked first in the series, leading Fiji by just two points.
Having grown up in Sydney, Qantas Men’s Sevens captain Ed Jenkins is thrilled his side will finally get to strut its stuff in his hometown.
“It’s really exciting,” Jenkins said.
“While it’s a great experience to be able to travel around the world we don’t get a lot of chances to play in front of family and friends so Sunday will be a great opportunity and one I know the whole team will really enjoy.
“We haven’t had the opportunity to plays a Sevens game in Sydney before and what better way to kick it off than against the best team in the world.”
The Qantas Men’s Sevens squad for Glasgow and London is currently assembled at the Sydney Academy of Sport in Narrabeen.
They will head to Allianz Stadium on Sunday, 29 April, for the international exhibition game against the New Zealand Sevens side at 3:00pm. The trans-Tasman rivalry will then continue when the HSBC Waratahs take on the Crusaders, kicking off at 4:10pm.
The Sevens will be broadcast on Fox Sports 2HD and Fox Sports 2 at 6:30pm on Sunday, 29 April.
