The best Indigenous Rugby Sevens players from across southern Queensland and northern New South Wales will be on display this Saturday at Ballymore Stadium in Brisbane, as part of the annual Ella Sevens tournament.

Named after the illustrious Ella brothers – Mark, Gary and Glen – the Ella Sevens series offers Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women the opportunity to represent their community during a fun-filled day of exciting and fast-paced seven-a-side Rugby.

The action kicks off at Ballymore at 9:30am tomorrow (Saturday Nov 2nd), with players from 14 teams (eight men and six women) vying for selection in the men’s and women’s National Indigenous Rugby Sevens teams.

This weekend’s event in Brisbane is one of three annual Ella Sevens tournaments, with the other two taking place in Cairns and Coffs Harbour. The series is the marquee Indigenous Rugby Sevens competition within the Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development Program.

The second event of the series was held last weekend in Cairns with more than 100 participants. The Northern Natives won the men’s competition with the help of former Australian Sevens player, Casey Mitchell. Brisbane’s Murri Magic won the women’s event and will attempt to make it two wins in as many weeks this weekend at Ballymore.

The Ella Sevens series will kick off again in Coffs Harbour next year, with more than 30 teams set to compete across the men’s and women’s competition to be held on Friday the 18th of February and Saturday the 1st of March.

The tournament provides opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in Rugby from the grassroots to professional level, with players having the chance to be selected to represent Australia in Rugby Sevens at the 2014 Commonwealth Games for men and the 2016 Olympic Games for men and women.

Entry is free on the day and the draw can be found on the Lloyd McDermott Rugby Facebook Page.
