Northern Suburbs were crowned Sydney Premier Sevens Men’s champions last night after defeating the Warringah Rats 22-17 in the final at Forshaw Rugby Park, whilst Parramatta triumphed in the Women’s event.
Despite finishing second to the previously undefeated Rats in their qualifying pool last week, the Shoremen’s combination of potent attack and courageous defence proved unbeatable come finals night.
Third place was claimed by Parramatta, who defeating Sydney University 31-26 in another tight encounter. Leading in the closing stages, the Two Blues’ desperate defence up to the task, holding the Students out and preventing them from snatching a late victory.
Former Wallaby and Australian Sevens player Jim Williams presented the winners’ trophies and was very impressed with the quality of sevens on show, predicting a bright future for many of the tournament’s stars.
“A number of players clearly have the talent to go further in sevens rugby and playing this style of tournament allows them to test their skills against top opposition.”
In the women’s competition, Parramatta topped the three-team finals table after impressive victories over the Redbacks from Northern Suburbs 17-12 and Rockdale 31-7.
Following the success of the inaugural competition, NSW Rugby Union and Sydney Rugby Union are hoping to expand this competition in 2014 and, in association with Australian Rugby Union, are exploring the possibility of a national competition for future years.
