The Qantas Australian Men’s Sevens team have overcome hot conditions and an even hotter Kenyan team 24-12 to scorch their way into the Cup semi-finals of the Gold Coast Sevens at Skilled Park today.
Australia started well in the Cup quarter final as they tried to overcome their second day hoodoo. A penalty just metres out from the Kenyan line gave the home team an excellent attacking platform.
Shannon Walker made no mistake, sizzling through a half gap to trot around under the posts. The conversion from Cam Clark made it 7-0 after three minutes.
But in an instant Kenya hit back with a superbly worked try to Biko Adema after a powerful break from wing Oscar Ouma. Adema converted his own try and it was back to 7-all.
Kenya were in front before half time Ouma rounded Australian captain Ed Jenkins a second time to set up a try for Patrice Agunda. This time the conversion was wide and Kenya led 12-7 going into the second half.
But Jenkins made up for moments into the second half as he burst away to sprint fifty metres and score under the posts. Clark’s conversion made it 14-12 with six minutes to play.
Jenkins then gave the final pass to Sean McMahon a minute later for the powerful winger to burst over in the left hand corner and make it 19-12 to Australia. Clark missed the conversion.
But moments later Nick Malouf showed extreme speed to sprint through another gap in the tiring Kenyan defence and make the score 24-12. Clark was again unsuccessful with the conversion but he turned try-saver shortly afterwards pulling off a superb covering tackle.
Kenya attacked desperately in the final minutes but Australia defended just as desperately to hold the Lions out and set up a semi-final clash at 4.20pm with South Africa.
