Sophie Monk plays ball for Gold Coast Sevens

It’s time to play, with tickets for the Gold Coast Sevens on sale from 9:00am Monday 9 September. Fans who purchase their tickets on Monday 9 September will be rewarded with an early bird discount of 20% on all tickets.
 
On Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 October, Skilled Park will be overrun with fun, fancy dress and fast and furious Rugby action as the opening round of the HSBC Sevens World Series kicks off.
 
Now into its third year Gold Coast Sevens today announced local girl Sophie Monk as the Event’s new ambassador.
 
“Sevens is so much fun - it’s like they've created a version of Rugby for people like me with short attention spans! Quick intervals and with all those teams, there’s plenty to keep you entertained!” Ms Monk said.
 
“Watching the Rugby has always been a family affair. The Monks will be getting all dressed up for the Gold Coast Sevens this year.”

SEVENS FAST FACTS:
* 7 players per team
* 7 minutes each way on a full-sized pitch
* A try is scored every 2.5 minutes
* Sevens will debut in 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil
* 16 international teams play 45 matches across two days
* Fiji are Gold Coast Sevens defending champions
* New Zealand are current HSBC Sevens World Series title holders

Queensland Minister for Tourism and Major Events, Jann Stuckey said the Queensland Government was proud to support the Gold Coast Sevens through Tourism and Events Queensland as part of a growing calendar of sporting, cultural and regional events throughout the state.

“Rugby Sevens is a dynamic sport that forms part of the Gold Coast’s growing event calendar,” she said.

“As a Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games sport, the Sevens festival provides residents with a taste of the world class sporting events and community festivals that the Gold Coast is renowned for.”

Acting Mayor Donna Gates urged local residents to get behind the Gold Coast Sevens. 

“The City is a major supporter of this Event, which is certainly one of Australia’s unique sporting experiences,” she said.

“It’s a weekend of non-stop entertainment including dance and karaoke battles, live music and thousands of people in fancy dress.”

Australia and NZ participate in strongest ever Oceania Sevens
The Federation of Oceania Rugby Unions (FORU) has announced that the 2014 Oceania Sevens will be played between 3-4 October alongside the Noosa International Sevens on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. The Sevens will provide the perfect launch pad for the 2014/2015 IRB Sevens World Series that kicks off on the Gold Coast a week later.
